The lifelong fascination for steel of its founder, Monsieur Eugène SCHAAL,

gave a lasting vocation to BARENTHAL. From the production of prototypes to the construction of tools for shaping and cutting, he devoted his life to the manufacture of luxury solid steel, then silver-plated, cutlery.

Just after the war in 1947, he founded a company, SMS, “Société Métallurgique de Saarwellingen”, located in the town of the same name in the then French Saare region. He put all his knowledge to full use, specialising in the manufacture of cutlery for the hotel and catering industry.
The new technologies employed ensured rapid popularity among a public accustomed to aluminium cutlery or silverware.
As the region was part of France at the time, the company expanded into the French market.

In 1954, SMS had a staff of over 130, with 75 % of its production oriented towards the very promising French market.
